This track has been recorded in 1989 in my home studio in Basel, Switzerland shortly after my former band "Touch El Arab" had split up.
The Paris based Swiss fashion designer Rolf Gautschti had connected me to Gabriela Arnon, a wonderful singer-songwriter from New York. Gabriela came over to my studio and recorded - almost in one take - this beautiful, completely improvised vocal on the existing instrumental track I had created which itself was based on field recordings my dad had made on a trip to Kenya.
Gabriela was like in a trance when she performed the vocal. From then on we started to work together on a regular basis and after I had moved to Paris we recorded more demo material and did a few gigs under the name "Ten Mother Tongues". Our album "The Listening Tree" was about to get signed to Virgin Venture when Richard Branson decided to sell Virgin to EMI. And that was the end of the wonderfully leftfield division Virgin Venture and also the end of the dream to have a record deal and funds to produce a proper album. The songs remain in a state of advanced demos, but this particular song "Bandoki" was the one which couldn't really get any better.
So more than 30 years later here it is: "Bandoki" which means "ghosts" "or "sorcerers" in the Lingala language.
